This is what I hope will be my final communication to you concerning someone we put on the confidential file, Larry Calabro. on September 22, 1988, Mr. Calahro pleaded guilty to seven counts of child molestation. Enclosed is a newspaper article from the Gainesville Times giving highlights of the case. Sincerely, Wayne Brock Scout Executive WB:ld A UNITED CONFO2225O s"r SEPTEMBER 23. 1988 Hal scotitmaster pleads guilty to By Jane M. He could receive up to 140 years in prison in addition . to fines. said l-lall County Superior Court Judge John Calabro Girardeau. who presided over yes- terday's proceedings. Calabro, who led a Scouts troop for about three years. pleaded guilty to touching, fondling and stroking the penises of seven Boy Scouts ages 8 to 10. said Bill Browneil. an assistant district at- torney. The incidents occurred from January 1987' to February of this year. indictments handed down by a Hall County grand jury this past spring showed. Calabro also was indicted on two counts of aggravated child molestation. which he did not plead guiity to and for which he will not be prosecuted, Brownell said. "There are several reasons we agreed to this." Brownell said. "There is only ll) years' difference in the sentence for aggravated child molestation and child molestation. The parole board would do little with it. It would affect his actual Lime in prison very little. "And we looked at the anguish it would cause the children and their child VIV9 parents to have to testify. We also looked at the cost to the county," Browneli said. Brownell said Caiabro may face additional charges of child molestation in Rabun County. The alleged incidents occurred during a camping trip he took with scouts to Rabun County. Those cases, how- ever, have not yet been discussed with Mountain Circuit District At- torney .'/iike Crawford, Browne-ll said. Calabro, who has been held in the Hall County Detention Center since his arrest in March, appeared in court yesterday in a navy jacket, gray pants and burgundy striped tie. He wore a patch over his left and glasses when he signed the guilty plea. He answered Girardeau's ques- tions with a stern voice; it ap-- peared to quiver only one time, and at that point, he hung his head as Git-arileau read the indictments. Calabro's wife sat in the courtroom fighting to hold back tears; some flowed anyway. Also in the courtroom were some Boy Scouts and their parents. They were accompanied by Judy Smith of the Hall County Department of Family and Children Services. She took them all into a separate room after the proceedings ended. After the proceedings, Robbins said of Calabro's decision, as- sume he decided to plead guilty because he was guilty." Calabro also waived his right to withdraw his plea. Robbins said he plans an agg- ressive sentencing hearing. Calabro, who worked as a me- chanic for the Hall County Fire Department for about three years, was arrested March 4 of this year in Roselle Park, N..I., where he had just moved with his family.
