We are about 8 miles outside of Helmville, a small town surrounded by big ranches. I enjoy the outdoors - hiking, fishing and hunting and riding the ATV's. I'm pretty much a do-it-yourself type of guy. When we moved to Montana in 1999, I needed a shop to work in and store stuff. I had a guy scheduled to help me build it that backed out at the last minute so I ended up building it by myself. I try to do my own automotive work and I do my own plumbing and electrical work. I like to keep up with political news. I spend a couple hours a day on the computer reading up on national and international issues and news. I enjoy playing cards - poker and other non-gambling type games. I enjoy cooking and make most types of dishes - I do not bake - baking requires following a recipe and I generally do not use recipes. I make my own marinades and rubs and developed my own spice Candidate: Dist: STATE: mixtures for making wild game salami and jerky. I am fond of hot, spicy food. My wife and I like to travel and we usually take a couple trips each year. One memorable trip was a I5 day, 4000 mile trip to New Mexico for annual Hatch, NM Chile Festival pulling our travel trailer- we have also attended the Hot and Fiery Foods Conference a couple times. Several of our trips the past few years have been to the graduations and weddings of our nieces and nephews in Washington State. There are still two more to graduate, one each ofthe next two years. While in the US Navy I lived in Holy Loch Scotland for two years and I started a bowling team that traveled around Europe representing the ship in tournaments. At one time I considered going Pro. As there are no bowling alleys close by, I no longer bowl. l--ww~ l->>mm ISSUES: Please go into detail candidate position and exceptions on each issue. Has Candidate put stance on issues in campaign lit.'? Right to Work: I support the right to work and do not think you should be forced to join a union as a condition of employment 1 Abortion Life Issues: I will support the republican position. I am against spending tax payer funds for abortions. Guns: The 2"d Amendment is an individual right. It is not just about hunting -it is about self defense and the people having the ability to overthrow a tyrarmical government. If the current gun control laws existed 225 years ago, we would all be speaking with a British Accent. I support the Vermont style of guns laws. I believe Candidate: Dist: STATE: that if the government and police are better armed than the citizens, we are bordering on becoming a Police State. --ww Taxes/Spending and Govermnent: Our current taxes are Way too high and government is way too big. People know how to spend their money better than the govermnent. I will sign the pledge to not vote to raise taxes. 1-~m Federal Marriage Amendment: Marriage is a religious institution the government should not be involved in marriage other than to record it and our tax laws should not discriminate between being married and single. This is also a States Rights issue and should be decided at the local level. - - Crime/Death penalty: I support the death penalty in certain, rare instances. I support making the penalty for committing a crime harsh enough so it is a good deterrent. Prison conditions are too cozy With all the Weight rooms, color TVs, computers, Prison should be bad enough so that a person will Want to avoid it Development (Energy, Resources, Building): I support a free market in energy - if it is a viable solution, then let the free market develop it. Other Issues: Our Education system is horribly under-funded. Teacher pay has fallen from 26th in the nation in 1983 to 47th in 2007. 71% of people graduating with a teaching degree leave the state to find employment. We must raise teacher salaries to remain competitive. I am also in favor of offering incentives to attract industry that Candidate: Dist: STATE: will create good paying jobs to Montana. Too many people have to leave their Montana homes and Way of life to seek employment elsewhere that allows them to support their families. Intel Wanted to build a plant in Steilacooni, WA in the mid l900's. The surrounding communities did not have the required pool of skilled Workers so Intel began a training program to boost the number of Workers with the needed skills. We need that to happen more often in Montana. I also support making all un-reimbursed healthcare expenses, including privately paid health insurance, a state tax deduction. If your employer pays your health insurance, he gets a deduction if you pay it, you don't. This would help small businesses. Date 0 Mike Miner re) - Mr see House cet. 84 Mike Miller Republican Candidate for House District #84 Who is Mike Miller? I joined the United States Navy in 1970 and served until 1978. I was a missile fire control technician and during that time I made 4 nuclear submarine patrols. Following that, I was a Field Service Engineer for 7 years working on computer mainframe peripherals, followed by 8 years at The Boeing Company as a Systems Analyst. I then worked for about 6 years as a contract Software Test Engineer for Microsoft. After moving to Montana in 1999, I started my own business - Lakeview Computer Services, a computer consulting company providing computing support to the local schools and area residents. I was married in 1975 and became a widower in 1990. I inet my wife, JoAnne, at Boeing and we married in 1993. She is a Montana native and her grandparents homesteaded on the Fairfield Bench in the l920's. We currently reside in I-Ielrnville where we have lived for 9 years. We have no children, but do enjoy our many nieces and nephews. I am running for Representative, not just to vote my personal views, but to be responsive to, and representative of; the views of the people that elect me. However, here are a few of my personal positions. I: 0 Am very conservative tiscally, believing in sinaller government and people doing more for themselves. Firmly believe the 2"d amendment is an individual right and is not just about hunting. 0 Support property rights and think the government should not tell businesses or individuals what they can and cannot do on their property. 0 Strongly believe in personal privacy and think the government does not need to read all your emails, listen to your phone calls or know every financial transaction you make. 0 Believe in States Rights and oppose the Federal Government's RealID act. I am proud that Montana has told the Feds that Montana will not comply. 0 Support a strong, well funded public educational system while at the same time supporting the right that people have to home school their children. I know that you can spend your money more wisely and efficiently than the government can and I pledge to not raise taxes. I believe State government is too big now and certainly does not need to grow. I support making all un-reimbursed medical expenses, including privately paid health insurance, a State Income Tax deduction. I recognize that compromise in politics is a necessity, but I will never compromise my integrity just to vote the "party line". People have asked me "what will you do for me if you are elected"'? My response is will protect your Freedom and Liberty to the best of my ability". Freedom to Hunt and Fish -- A state where eco-extremists are no longer padlocking our public lands, denying access to Montana's sportsmen and recreationists. A state where the right to keep and hear arms and to harvest wild game and Esh is forever guaranteed. Freedom ofPe1sonal Privacy - A state where government understands its constitutional roles and limits. A state that protects the God-given rights of all Montanans to pursue their own happiness, keep what they earn, control their own property, protect their families and live at peace with their fellow man - tree from the government reading your emails, listening to your phone calls and tracking your financial transactions. This is just a short list to give you an idea of what I want to Eght for when I get to Helena One piece of legislation I want to introduce is to make all un-reinibursed medical expenses, including privately paid Health Insurance, a State Income Tax deduction. Pm sure that I can be an effective legislator, building relationships that will allow me to create consensus around important legislation and get it enacted into state law. We have a goat opportunity before us to make a difference in the future of our state and I plan to be right in the middle of things, tighting for our freedoms and liberty. We need to add just a few more conservative voices to those courageous Republicans who serve us so well now. That will allow us to start accomplishing the goals on my "Freedom List", building a dynamic economy and forging a bright future for all of us. By now I am sure you are asking yourself "What can I do to help Mike Miller get to Helena'?" It is never easy to defeat an incumbent; no matter how bad his voting record is, because the challenger has to spend a lot of time and money bringing that record to light. I need to raise at least $5000 to run an effective primary campaign against an opponent that will likely out spend me 2 to l. I need to raise it as soon as possible so I can concentrate my own efforts on door to door campaigning and other vote getting priorities. The June 3"d primary is rapidly approaching and if I don't win, the game is over and you will be stuck with the liberal John Ward in Helena again. Couples can contribute a maximum $320 in the primary, individuals $160. If you can afford such a generous donation, it would be a huge boost to me. But any amount is extremely important and would be much appreciated. Your donation will allow me to start ordering signs, brochures, direct mail pieces and advertising. So please, send me whatever you can today - together, we will make a difference. Thanks so very much. Yours for a better and freer Montana, Mike Miller Republican for House District 84 P.S. Union officials have historically sought to gain bargaining powers over public employees. For this reason, Right to Work supporters oppose any imposition of monopoly bargaining over public employees by union officials. But instead of giving us relief, our politicians in Helena continue to impose ever-higher taxes on all of us. Let's face it. They believe they know how to spend your money better than you do. My name is Mike Miller, and I am running to be your next State Representative. I believe that you can decide how to best spend your own money without some politician doing it for you. The fact is, there are things we can and should do at the state level NOW to help ease the effects of the current economic downturn. 'Streamlining government and cutting wasteful spending is a first, obvious step. Yet, instead of limiting the size of our state government, the current administration and their allies passed the largest increase in spending in Montana's history. They think you'll fail to notice the different ways they have their hands in your wallet so that you'll send them all back to do it to you again next year. And, make no mistake, in order to keep this spending spree going, the taX~and-spenders in Helena are devising even more ways to separate you from your money. That's why I hope you'll fill out the voter survey I've enclosed. can accomplish this by permanently lowering taxes and removing expensive, crippling regulations. That's why I hope you'll fill out the voter survey Ifve enclosed. Together we can say NO to the needless spending, the economic meddling, and the radical social agenda of the special interests in Helena. If elected, I will: Fight for lower taxes, so that you can keep more of your hard-earned money; Work to put parents and teachers back in charge of education; Reverse out-of-control government spending and growth, because as you and I both know, it's time we put the brakes on big government; Defend traditional Montana values, standing firm against the liberal Democrats' assault on the lives of the unborn and our religious liberties; Stand up for the Second Amendment by respecting law~ abiding Montanans and fight for the right to keep and bear arms. You know, as the owner of a small business, Lakeview Computer Services, the biggest thorn in my side has always been the controlling hand of government. Just like the vast majority of Montanans, I believe as you do that liberty is a God~given right that cannot be compromised or traded. As a State Representative, I will stand up to the special interests in Helena, and I will work tirelessly to lower taxes, cut government spending and protect the family values that have always made Montana a model of freedom for the rest of the nation. That's why I'm asking for your vote. I know just as well as you do that high taxes and bureaucratic red tap equal fewer jobs and lower standards of living for all Montanans. I envision a Montana where good paying jobs are readily available and people are not forced to leave their Montana homes and heritage just to find a job to support their families. We can accomplish this by permanently lowering taxes and removing expensive, crippling regulations. If you believe, as I do, that we must take a stand for streamlined and efficient government, lower taxes and traditional morals, then I hope you will consider sending today along with your enclosed survey -- a contribution of $50, $75, $100, $160 or whatever you can afford. For more information, please visit my website at Paid for by the Campaign to Elect Mike Miller, 20906 Hwy 141 Helmvilie, NIT 59843 Republican Thursday morning Dear friend: Imagine if one of your friends or relatives deposited a $500 million check two years ago, only to turn around this year and ask you for a $250 million dollar loan because "that just wasn't enough money." Sounds a little far fetched, doesn't it? Well, maybe to ordinary folks like you and me it is, but not to the special interests in Helena, because that's just what the social-welfare bureaucrats and their allies in the State Legislature did . . but instead of "borrowing" the money, they just raised taxes and "fees" on us. My name is Mike Miller. I'm your Republican candidate in the race for State house District 84. Today l'm asking for your vote. With so much at stake this election cycle, it's never been more important that the good folks in House District 84 have a State Representative who won't do the same old political "two-step," talk one way at home, and then vote differently while at the Capitol. As your next State Representative, you can be confident that with me, what you see is what you get. I'm committed to keeping the lines of communication with constituents open - that is one reason I sent out a survey asking for your opinions and what is important to you. I want to represent your views, and not just mine when I get to Helena. I'd like to thank all of the many people that have returned the survey as one person commented "Thanks for asking, no one else ever has". This is the way that representative government is supposed to work. Like you, I'm tired of hearing the same promises every two years, only to turn around and get more of the same. The fact is, the social-welfare lobby and their allies in the legislature have already jacked our taxes up $210 million, and they've raised fees for services another $200 million. If you think this should stop, I hope you'll vote for me in the November 4th General Election. Like you, my wife JoAnne and I work hard to instill the traditional Montana values of hard work, personal responsibility, faith in God, and respect for family. It's for those reasons that organizations like Montana Shooting Sports Association have endorsed me. But those are values that always seem to be under attack. The good news is, while other states around us have been becoming more like the "left coast" year after year, the good folks in Montana are proud to "cling" to our traditional values that you and I hold dear. That's why Montana is one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family. I want to work hard to ensure that future generations of Montanans have the same opportunities that you and I did. If you agree I hope I can count on your vote on November dth. lf elected, you can Restore fiscal count on me to work to: sanity in Helena. Squandering a budget surplus belongs to the is irresponsible. That money people it came from- people like you and me. If the State has a surplus, it is because you are over~taxed, not that the State budget is "under~spent." We need to streamline government and make it more efficient; zkalruk it better than Lower taxes. You earned the money, you can spend government can, so I believe we should do everything we can to let you keep more of your paycheck. We need permanent tax relief, not just a one-time $400 rebate; Qphold t?aditiQQalHMontana values. It's vital we send someone to Helena who will fight for the Sanctity of Life, the Second Amendment, and strong families; Improve_pur schools. Montana needs to attract and retain our teachers, especially in rural schools. We need to maintain local control so our schools reflect our values, not those of the people in Washington Focus our state government on priorities. A government that does everything, does nothing well. Government needs to focus on essential services and leave the rest free for Montana citizens to work out. The fact is, as a small business owner, I understand first hand the economic burdens that excessive taxation and government regulations have on small businesses. I want to do away with the Business Equipment tax and help businesses expand, bringing more good-paying jobs to Montana. And I understand that's it's not just small businesses that high taxes hurt, but hardmworking Montana families as well. You see, higher taxes and outeofecontrol forced unionism only lead to less productivity and less jobs for Montanans. I understand that which is why I've been endorsed by Montana's Citizens for Right to Work PAC. And that's why, as your next State Representative, I will NEVER vote to raise your taxes. I am the only candidate in the race for House District 84 who has signed the "No New Taxes Pledge" with the Montanans for Tax Reform and have been endorsed by The Alliance of MT Taxpayers. I want to keep Montanans in Montana. You should not be forced to leave your home and heritage just to find a job that pays enough to support your family. Over 70% of our students graduating with a Teaching Degree leave Montana because they can get a higher paying job elsewhere this needs to be fixed. In addition, for years, special interests have supported policies that would damage the traditional Montanan values that make this state such a great place to live. And if we don't demand a course correction this November, I'm afraid the big~government lobby could finally get its way. That's why it's so important that folks like you and I have a voice in the State Legislature. I With so much at stake this election year, it never been so important that those of us who want to lower taxes and hang on to our traditional values stand up right now and say ENOUGH IS If you agree, then I hope you'll send your message loud and clear by voting for me, Mike Miller, on Tuesday, November 4th. Together, we can ensure that future generations of Montanans have a bright future full of opportunity. Sincerely, Mike Miller Republican Candidate State House District 84 P.S. Fiscal responsibility, freedom, common sense, and family values -- that's what I hope to restore to the Montana State Legislature if elected. If you agree, then I ask you to cast your vote for me, Mike Miller, in the November 4 General Election.
