Louis Riel: a famous name and a fabled legacy. A story central to Canadian history, about
which   societal   sentiment   has   evolved,   and   the   attendant   details   of   which   should   be
preserved. This catalogue includes source materials redolent of this history: Riel’s poetry,
photographs, newspapers from  the year  of the Northwest  Rebellion, and a  vast  array  of
respondent materials old and new, the volume and variety of which attest to the sustained
relevance of his influence.  
Mythologised variously as a rebel, traitor, madman, prophet and patriot, Louis Riel is one of
the   most   lionized   characters   in   the   annals   of   Canadian   history.   His   historically
controversial exploits began during the Red River Rebellion, when Riel was 25 years old and
President  of  the  Métis  National  Committee;  he  advocated on  behalf  of  the  Métis people,
negotiating terms with the Canadian Government which led to the founding of the Province
of Manitoba in 1870. 
After the Red River Rebellion, over a decade passed during which Riel went into exile in the
USA, suffered a nervous breakdown, was institutionalised, and elected to Parliament but
unable to take his seat. Responding to an invitation from Gabriel Dumont and the Métis in
Batoche, Riel returned to Canada in 1884, to lead the Northwest Rebellion. In May of 1885,
the Métis were defeated at Batoche, Riel surrendered, and was charged with treason. At his
trial, his counsel defended him on the grounds of insanity against his wishes; Riel ended
the   trial   with   a   rousing   speech   which   left   no   doubt   of   his   mental   acuity,   and   virtually
assured his prosecution. He was found guilty of high treason, and sentenced to death; on
November 16, 1885, at 41 years of age, Louis Riel was hanged.

“On the 16th of November, 1885, Louis Riel, the founder of Manitoba and leader of the Métis people 
was hanged for treason in Regina, Saskatchewan. After the execution, his body was put into this 
coffin and was originally slated to be buried in the gallows enclosure in Regina, but an order from 
the Lieutenant­Governor changed that plan. Instead his body was sent home to his mother's home 
in St. Vital, where he was put into a more elaborate coffin and after a time of lying in state, was 
buried in the churchyard of the St. Boniface Cathedral. The original coffin was kept by his family 
and for years held his personal belongings, and papers. Some years later, the family donated it to 
the St. Boniface cathedral where it remained until a fire destroyed the cathedral. Miraculously, the 
coffin survived but was damaged, losing most of the lower half of the coffin to the fire. Today the

folio.   This   is   the   original   newspaper   ­   it   is  not   a   reprint   or   copy.   Two   bound   volumes,
containing the entire year’s Monday to Saturday issues, with the exception of Nov. 24. The
first volume contains the papers from January to June, the second, July to December. The
first volume is intact with some wear; the second volume is missing its spine, boards are
loose but present and the text block intact but for some tattering to first and last pages;
edgewear throughout, and tide marks to some December issues. Each issue is complete,
measures 51 x 67 cm, with the text printed in 8 columns on both sides of the page. Book

Invaluable  source   material   about  one   of  the  major  flashpoints  of   Canadian   history,  these
papers contain the issues of the Manitoba Daily Free Press from the year of the Northwest
Rebellion, and Louis Riel’s trial and execution: a staggering volume of information, providing
detailed, often daily articles contemporary to events that shaped Canada and continue to
evoke emotion to this day. Reportage of the rebellion does not end on Nov 16, the date of
Riel’s hanging; commentary continues through the end of December and includes headlines
such   as   “History  of  Half­Breeds  and  How  They   Have   Been  Treated  by  the  Government”;
“Dumont Said to be Plotting Another Rebellion”; etc. Preservation of these original documents
is imperative to a continuing understanding of these momentous events.

this is the original newspaper ­ it is not a reprint or copy ­ and it contains all the pages as
printed for each issue. The binding holding the newspapers is now broken, but the internal
binding is intact. A few issues have large closed tears, else in very good condition. Note:
copies   of   this   newspaper   are   not   archived   in   the   website   "newspaperarchivedotcom".
Microfilmed copies are available for reference at the Millennium Library in Winnipeg, at and
only two other North American institutions. Each issue is complete in itself and measures
51   x   67   cm,   the   text   being   printed   in   eight   columns   on   both   sides   of   the   page.   Book

The Winnipeg Daily Times was published daily (except Sunday) by the Times Printing and
Publishing Company, commencing April 12, 1879 and concluding July 30, 1885. In its final
year, the publisher claimed it had the largest circulation of any newspaper in Manitoba.
The historical significance of this archive can hardly be overestimated, as it contains a day­
by­day   account   of   the   the   Northwest   Rebellion,   nominally   led   by   Louis   Riel,   and   the
subsequent capture and trial of the rebel leader. The daily dispatches from Regina, where
Riel's trial took place, are detailed and frequently quote extensively from actual testimony at
the trial, including most of Riel's frequent outbursts and interjections. They are the best eye

 witness account we have of what actually took place at what was clearly one of the most
historic trials in Canadian history.

The last (unnumbered) page contains a printed certificate from the
Riel family stating (our English translation): "We, members of the
Riel   family,   declare   and   certify   that   this   is   a   true   copy   of   the

 documents written and composed by Louis 'David' Riel". The certificate is dated January 12,
1886, shortly after Riel's execution for treason on November 16, 1885. Two longish poems are
set out, composed in 1879 while Riel was in exile in Montana. As there was at that time some
uncertainty as to their authenticity (the poems not having previously been published), the Riel
family was persuaded to attest to Riel's authorship. Few copies remain outside of academic
or government collections, and with the rehabilitation of Riel, which has recently taken place,
material associated with his name will only become more sought after. See Peel #960.

6. THOMAS SCOTT MEDALLION
In the history of Manitoba, Thomas Scott occupies a position
almost as controversial as that of Louis Riel. Scott was born
in   Ireland   in   1842,   and   immigrated   to   Canada   in   1863.   In
1869,   he   joined   the   crew   helping   to  build   "Dawson's   Road"
from   the   Lakehead   to   Winnipeg.   A   man   of   strong
temperament,   he   had   a   falling­out   with   his   boss   and
decamped   to   Fort   Garry,   as   the   yet­to­be­formed   Winnipeg
was then called.
Being an Orangeman (i.e. an Irish Protestant), he joined with
other   English   Canadians   living   in   the   settlement   to   oppose   Riel's   uprising   against   the
Canadian government plan to assimilate the settlement into Canada. Scott's methods and
manners were so abrasive that he was arrested several times by Riel and the Métis who had
occupied Upper Fort Garry. Although accounts differ, it is clear that, at some point, Riel
and   his   cabal   felt   that   Scott   had   to   be   dealt   with,   at   least   to   set   an   example   to   other
agitators within the settlement. Hence, on March 3, 1870, a perfunctory trial was held at
the fort, at which Scott was not allowed to hear the evidence against him, or to obtain legal
counsel, and he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death.
Shortly after noon on the next day he was tied to a post and shot at by six Métis using
muskets.   Apparently,   the   volley   did   not   kill   him   and   one   Métis   stepped   forward   to
administer the coup­de­grace. Scott was placed into a rough coffin and carried off into one
of the buildings of the fort, where he was heard to moan and call out for several hours. 
Eventually, his body was disposed of at an unknown location.
His   killing   sparked   outrage   in   Ontario,   and   led   to   the   formation   of   a   military   response
commanded by Col. Garnet Wolseley, with instructions from Prime Minister MacDonald to
put down the rebellion.
The   memory   of   Scott's   death   remained   a   flash­point   for   Ontario   Protestants   and
Orangemen   for   decades,   who   viewed   him   as   a   martyr.   In   1900,   in   Winnipeg,   the   local
Orange   Order   made   plans   to   build   a   memorial   hall   named   after   their   fallen   hero,   and
struck  a  special  medallion  on which  is  stamped  the  words:  "T.  Scott. Murdered  at  Fort
Garry, March 4, 1870."
It appears to be quite scarce, as we cannot find a similar medallion held in any archival
institution, nor has one recently been offered for sale.

 There is a small hole at the top of the medallion, which suggests it might have been nailed
to something or, perhaps, a fine necklace was strung through the hole and it was worn as a
pendant (albeit a somewhat heavy one).
An intriguing find, and redolent of history.

Begg came to Winnipeg in 1867, and was the first merchant
to bring in to the former Red River Colony goods of Canadian
manufacture.   An   entrepreneur   as   well   as   a   merchant,   he
started two local newspapers and wrote extensively. Nursey was more of a journalist and
entered various joint publishing ventures with Begg. This history, full of interesting, if obscure
facts,  details   the   minutia   of   everyday   business,  political   and   social   life   in  Winnipeg   from
approximately the day of the departure of Louis Riel (August 23, 1870) to July 1979. The 48­
page business directory at the end of the book is fascinating. See Peel (3rd) 860.

interesting comment on Riel). Published in Canada as "A Martyr's Folly", our offering is the 
first American edition of a novel about Louis Riel and the Red River Rebellion 1869­70. No 
dust jacket is present, but the blurb on the Canadian jacket reads, in part: "Riel combined 
the gallantry of his French blood with the ferocity of his Indian forbears. No more virile 
fighter and lover has come to life in the pages of modern fiction." Whew! This edition also 
lacks the Introduction by Pelham Edgar, who says, in that Introduction: "On re­reading the 
book I find it difficult to say where the author has gone wrong in the matters of actual fact."

 1954 as a Harlequin book! Constantin­Weyer (1881­1964) was born in France, and settled 
in Manitoba, near St. Claude in 1904. He married a Métis woman in 1910, but was 
unsuccessful at various odd jobs. He returned to France to fight in World War One, 
receiving 58 wounds, and became one of France's most decorated soldiers. He remained in 
his native country, eventually writing over 40 novels. Our copy has a slight spine slant, and
the spine is sunned. Light overall shelf wear. Contents clean and tight. A good plus copy.

brother of Louis Riel). Same name written in margin on p. 95 and p. 127 (which has off­set to
page 126). There is a different inscription, in ink in the same hand, on the reverse of the
photo plate of Gabriel Dumont, facing page 169 of volume II. It reads: "Ce livre a ete achetter
par   Joseph   Riel   /   Riel   P.O.   /   Manitoba",   which   translates   (approximately,   as   "achetter"

Red River Settlement (later Winnipeg). The book contains interesting observations on the 
1869/70 rebellion, the behaviour of Louis Riel, and the events following Riel's flight from 
Winnipeg. This is a first edition, published in the same year as the Musson edition of

We have done no more than read the blurb on the back cover of this book, and glance 
through its contents, but it appears to be a self­published effort at interpreting known 
historical facts and mixing them with "vital secrets" which the author claims to have 
uncovered when "he was chosen by Ottawa to 'sift through the red­hot coals' to find the 
truth. The prime minister at the time, John Diefenbaker, introduced him to Eli Dumont, 
the hero of Tourond Coulee." It appears that portions of the book would benefit from re­
writing, and that the whole would be greatly improved by the application of some 
professional editing skills. No copies located in WorldCat or Amicus, although the latter 
shows Thompson as the author of "'Winipic: the city that would not die' ­ Lord Selkirk's 
astounding version and praise ­­ for the founders who overcame arson, murder, slaughter
