Bypass in Beliaghata, Kolkata, where students of the West Bengal National Law University of uridieal Sciences (WBNUJ S), Kolkata were assaulted when they reportedly tried to prevent the eviction of a slum; based on an order of Hon?ble High Court, Calcutta, this press release is made to clarify the stand of the West Bengal National University of uridical Sciences and to deny the facts that have been misreported in the publications. a) b) The students of WBNUJS who have been reportedly involved in the incidents and were beaten up in the process, did not have any prior approval from the WBNUJ authorities, neither the WBNUJ Authorities had any prior knowledge of involvement of its students in the incident. The students of WBNUJS who are the volunteers to the IDIA Initiative, aimed at empowering underprivileged students through legal education towards making legal education in India more diverse, inclusive and impactful (Source IDIA Law Blog, by Prof. Shamnad Basheer) had acted on their own in the High Court proceedings and the events leading up to the incident. Most of the students of WBNUJ reside in Hostels premised in the WBNUJ Campus in Salt Lake, WBNUJ being a residential University. Page I of 2- d) Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, the Registrar (Acting) of WBNUJ S, intervened only when the incidents of alleged assault of the WBNUJS were reported to him. Besides being Registrar (Acting), Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan is also the Cheif Warden of the WBNUJ Hostels. Dr. Khan, along with other faculty members of the University, rushed to meet the student victims at hospital and ensure timely medical help they needed. The injured students were taken by the police from the hospital to the police station to have their statements recorded. Dr. Khan also subsequently reached the police station to ensure that the students assembled at the police station are safely returned home to the Hostel. The WBNUJS, as a premier Law School, stands by its commitment to the cause of justice.
