5 November, 2016" Legislative Assembly of the NWT Honourable Jackon Laffertyli - . - . - Speaker - . 1- .: - 1 NOV 0.7 2315 Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly . Yellowknife Speakers office ?quiis 01/1. Dear . afferty: I am writing to apply for support from the Retraining Assistance for Non-Returning Members program. Having served 8.14 years, I understand I have access to up to $8,000 if my application IS approved by the Board of Management I am applying fer: 1) Retirement planning with a ?nancial advisor, cost estimated at 450. 00 as per the attached; and 2) Retraining support to learn how to start up an NWT Renewable Energy Cooperative, cost estimated at 750.00, attached budget and baek-up documents As I reached 65 years of age on our last day of service in the 17* Assembly, the retirement planning request is self evidentFor background on item 2) above, I have been working to become informed! and develOp- contacts .1 towards the development of an NWT Renewable Energy Cooperative that would support our communities' and residents' energy needs in a sound and economic way. This has entailed sitting in on webinars, internet research and having many discussions with people and agencies in the NWT and beyond. Interest is high, but informed leadership is needed to get such an entity started. The leading cooperative in Canada is the Toronto Renewable Energy Cooperative (TREC). One of their goals is to help other cooperatives and similar structures start up across Canada. Through correspondence with the previous and current Executive Directors, and sitting in on a webinar sponsored by TREC and the province of Alberta, I have garnered their support to access their expertise to learn about what is required to start such a cooperative, and to deve10p a strategy of steps towards an NWT cooperative. Unfortunately, there are no short courses on starting a cooperative offered in Canada, as re?ected in the attached materials. However I am fortunate that TREC has offered to assist in the absence of such a course, and it is support to Spend a week with the TREC staff in Toronto learning about starting a cooperative for which I am applying. Given that they have not indicated a charge for this (see attached correspondence), the cost would be my travel cost to spend 5 days in their Toronto of?ce. Training would include the development of a strategy list of steps to follow in order to establish such an entity here. w: While I am retired, I would still like to continue contributing to northern society. Retraining such as - that proposed would help enable me to do this work. Thanks much for your consideration. Please contact me at 867-444- 3812 or cern if you or the Board have questions or would like to discuss any aspect of this application - - 1 - - . . {lab Robert G.
