Satisfaction of Pre-Existing Legal Obligations Other . Proposed Purchases (details of the goods or services to be purchased):The annual Boston Tree Lighting includes a variety of ,activities to provide Nova Scotia with exposure in this important market, while preserving a tradition of giving between Boston and Nova 'fScotia. Activities include sponsorship of the City of Boston?s Christmas Tree lighting and the television broadcast, collateral items for promotion, ?and talent for the tree event ceremony. As well, we propose continuing the partnership with a local broadcaster, which was established with CTV Atlantic the last few years. This year we reached out to all three major broadcasters and asked for proposals. (see attached). This partnership provides coverage of the Boston Tree event including the cutting, tranSportation and lighting of the tree, as well as on site broadcast from Boston. We asked each broadcaster to prepare a proposal that would help tell this story to Nova Scotia, ensuring they understand the variety of activities that happen during this event (ie trade mission). Other activities include a partnership between 3 Halifax School and a Boston school to help our young people appreciate and understand the Halifax explosion and how both cities worked together to i help a city in need, as well as other promotion activities in Boston. iValue of Purchases: iSupporting Reasons: (lfyou require additional space please submit on separate page): i iSince 1972, Nova Scotia has given a Christmas tree to the people of the City of Boston in gratitude for their assistance and support following the Halifax Explosion in 1917. Many Nova Scotians are proud of this Christmas tradition, particularly the owners of the chosen tree. The City of Boston Parks Department manages the Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Boston Common on behalf of the City; in conjunction with this, the 3 local ABC af?liate produces a one-hour show and broadcasts the Lighting ?live". The show is then rebroadcast on Christmas Eve. Approximately 20,000 people attended the live event last year and the televised live show reached 200,000 viewers. Boston City staff and the TV station have indicated that without ?nancial support from the Province of Nova Scotia, this public event and broadcast may not continue. There's a slight increase as a result of an increase in sponsorship for the City of Boston, the local broadcaster and costs for the send-off event, as well as i increased activity with the Premier in Boston. Every effort is being made to reduce the costs and ?nd partners with other businesses and within government.
