My sister Camille filed 22 incident reports with the Winnipeg Police and nothing stopped her husband from killing her. They said they didn`t have evidence. Would 100 incident reports have made a difference? Would 200 incident reports have mattered if they never had evidence? Remember this as you read on. Camille is now dead. I’m not going to sugar coat anything, she was brutally murdered on October 30th, 2015; one day before Halloween, her favourite holiday. I know he planned it that way. I’m not here to ask for your pity, I don’t want it. What I want, what I need, is your support. How? You need to get angry. Throughout this nightmare many have asked, “What could we have done to prevent this?” We need a solution. If we find a solution, you can stop feeling helpless. You can help to stop YOU, or your sister, or mother, or friend, or your children from getting psychologically terrorized until they are a shell of their former self, and eventually, tragically, dead at the hands of someone who vowed to love and protect them. We all watched Camille unbearably suffer and we all had our hands tied. There wasn’t anything anyone could do, not even Winnipeg’s Finest Police officers. I’m not here to point fingers, I want to change laws. The current laws prevented anyone from coming to her rescue. I have a solution that is a win-win for the victim and accused. As of now, if you are ‘lucky’, then a restraining order is issued, which so many have admitted is simply a ‘piece of paper’. Let’s add something more, my solution, when a restraining order is issued, add an ankle bracelet and a phone number to get counselling. If the accused is indeed stalking the victim, the ankle bracelet could almost certainly provide evidence if the abuse continues. On the other hand, if the accused is innocent, the benefit for them is that they can feel secure in the fact that they may be cleared of such offences. This technology is already out there, there’s nothing new to invent here, only details to work out. Why would anyone refuse to go along with this? Isn’t the end game to have evidence on the actual perpetrator? It works for the victim and the innocent. That is who needs protection. Isn’t this a very logical -and potentially life changing- idea? If you agree, contact your MLA and/or MP and tell them your story, or simply say you want this idea to be discussed and examined. This is a solution to consider. Laws can and need to change. Let’s save some lives. I wish I could have saved Camille.
