September 9, 2015 – Toronto, Canada Re: Response to the Wednesday, September 9 Liberal Party statement regarding the Munk Debates. In all of our public and private communications with the three party leaders invited to take part in the Munk Election Debate on Canada’s Foreign Policy, we indicated that our event would have “bilingual components”. The draft format that we proposed to the parties last week includes components conducted in both official languages. At no time did we state that the debate would be bilingual. Regarding our ticketing procedure for the debate, The Munk Debates have over 30,000 paid and unpaid members. We made the tickets available to our thousands of members today, with any remaining tickets offered to our unpaid members and the general public on Friday. The cost of organizing this debate, as with all our debates, is considerably more than the revenues generated through ticket sales. As such, our ability to hold this debate for the public’s benefit is only possible thanks to a generous charitable subsidy made possible by the Aurea Foundation. We hope that we will have the opportunity to have a constructive dialogue with all three parties regarding the format for our debate, and host all three leaders in Toronto on Monday, September 28.” The Munk Election Debate on Canada’s Foreign Policy, Canada’s first-ever federal election debate devoted to foreign policy issues, is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 28 at 7:00 PM EDT at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. The Munk Debate will be broadcast in French and English via CPAC and through an online distribution and broadcast partnership with Facebook Canada. Viewers can also watch the debate live via www.munkdebates.com in French or English. A broadcast-quality feed of the debate will be made available to other networks who wish to carry it.
