From: Justin Mayhew, Associate, (919) 324-4900 To: Interested parties Subject: Majority of Portland voters is concerned about Portland’s future under the leadership of Mayor Michael Brennan. Date: 7/23/15 A new survey from Public Policy Polling finds that 52% of Portland voters are concerned about Portland’s future while 46% say it’s on the right track under the leadership of Mayor Michael Brennan. The survey also conducted multiple hypothetical head-to-head races against the first-term mayor in a possible preview of this fall’s mayoral election. The survey found that the strongest candidate against the first-term mayor would be State Senator Ethan Strimling, who has a one-point advantage, 38/37, in a hypothetical headto-head against the first-term mayor. The pro-Strimling coalition is broad-based, with pluralities of women, middle class voters, Republicans, Green Party voters, unenrolled voters, voters 46 to 65, and voters older than 65 in favor of new leadership in Portland. When matched up head-to-head against former four-time Mayor and current city councilor Nick Mavodones, Brennan holds a 40/33 lead. Brennan dominates in a matchup with current city councilor, and declared mayoral candidate, Ed Suslovic 47/25. When the field is expanded to three candidates, Strimling still comes out on top. In a three-way race against Brennan and Councilman Ed Suslovic, Strimling holds a one-point lead. Strimling receives 30% of the vote in the three-way contest to Brennan’s 29% and Suslovic’s 14%. Strimling retains plurality support from women, Green Party voters, unenrolled voters, voters 46 to 65, and voters over 65 in the expanded field. Against City Councilmen Mavodones and Suslovic, Brennan leads with 36% of the vote, followed by 22% for Mavodones, and 12% of Suslovic. PPP surveyed 556 Portland voters from July 17th to 21st. The margin of error is +/-4.1%. This poll was conducted by automated telephone interviews.
