What to Know about Downtown Construction: • Traffic and bus changes during the renovation of Public Square will go into effect March 9, 2015. • Public Square is the largest of the construction projects breaking ground Downtown in the coming months. Other projects include infrastructure improvements and road resurfacing to enhance the appearance and usability of Downtown Cleveland. • DowntownCleveland.com is the source for up-to-date information on street closures, accessibility and alternate routes during construction. • RideRTA.com features the latest information for transit riders including route, schedule and bus stop changes. Impacts on Drivers, Pedestrians and Transit Riders: • Necessary changes have been made to the traffic, bus and pedestrian patterns around Public Square, with a goal to limit the impact on those who live and travel Downtown. These changes will begin March 9 and remain in effect through the duration of the project. • During the renovation of Public Square, Ontario Street and Superior Avenue within the square will be closed to all traffic. The surrounding Public Square Roadways and Rockwell Avenue will be accessible to RTA and local vehicular traffic only. (See map for details.) • Parking garages and buildings on the perimeter of Public Square will be open and accessible to residents and Downtown employees. • Bus stops, shelters and bus layover areas have been reorganized to accommodate the closure of Public Square. Only the perimeter sidewalks and crosswalks surrounding Public Square will be accessible to pedestrians. When complete, the renovated Public Square will offer convenient walking paths. VISITORS/ENTERTAINMENT Q. How will this impact my trip Downtown for sporting events or entertainment? A. There will be special access within the Square to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Q. I have an event/meeting in a building along the Square. Is it accessible? A. Yes. Also, exterior sidewalks along the perimeter of Public Square will be open for pedestrians. QUALITY OF LIFE/SAFETY Q. How will construction and noise impact residents and workers? A. Construction will mostly take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. In the initial months of the project some critical utility work will take place after 7 p.m. Project leadership has met with impacted residents’ groups and the adjacent hotel to provide them with this information. Downtown employees enjoy eating lunch in the Square or attending the Farmers’ Market. Will it be moved somewhere? Where can I go during construction? A. When complete, Public Square will host a wide variety of activities. While the Square is under renovation, Downtown employees are encouraged to take advantage of the area’s walkability and enjoy other green spaces in the area. These include Perk Plaza (the site of Walnut Wednesday), the Mall, and North Coast Harbor. Information about the new Farmers’ Market location will be available soon. Q. I was hoping to take wedding photos/hold an event/host a rally on Public Square. Will that be permitted? A. There will be no public access to the interior of Public Square during construction. There will be special access to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Q. Will the services offered by Downtown Cleveland Alliance’s Clean and Safe Ambassadors still be available during the renovation of Public Square? A. Yes, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance’s Clean and Safe Ambassadors will be at work during construction. DCA Ambassadors are available to help with questions about alternate routes during the renovation of Public Square. Q. Will this construction affect areas outside of Public Square? A. Construction will be confined to a fenced-in area around the current four quadrants of the Square. Shutting down the entire interior of the Square ensures a confined construction zone and minimizes disruption outside the area. The outer sidewalk around the perimeter of the Square will remain open during construction. Construction vehicles will have designated entry and exit points in specific locations on the Square.
