U.S veterans who helped in the liberation of France during World War II can be eligible to receive the French Legion of Honor Medal, created to celebrate extraordinary contributions to the country. To be eligible for this outstanding award, you must fit the following criteria: To apply at the Consulate General of France in Chicago You must be a resident of the following states: Illinois – Indiana – Iowa – Kansas – Kentucky – Michigan – Minnesota – Missouri – Nebraska – Ohio - North Dakota – South Dakota – Wisconsin. You must have fought on French territory in one or more of the four main campaigns of the Liberation of France: Normandy, Southern France, Northern France and French side of the Ardennes. Please note that actions taking place in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, or other European countries will not be taken into account. In order to apply for this award, simply send the following documents to: Consulate General of France - Attn: Legion of Honor 205 N Michigan Ave, Suite 3700 – Chicago IL 60601 • A legible copy of your discharge/separation papers - both sides (DD214) Please indicate on a separate paper the Division in which you fought if it is not mentioned on your discharge papers. • Copies of the citations for military awards you received (i.e. Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, etc.) that do not already appear on your discharge papers. • A brief description of your combat actions during the war, that occurred while on French soil only, French cities you helped liberate, combat which was particularly difficult, where and how you received injuries (if any). For POW please indicate where you were captured by the enemy. • Veteran’s full name: First name – Middle initial – Last name ; current telephone number ; mailing address, and email if any. If applicable, the name, telephone number and email of an additional contact (family member, VA assistant…). Please note: The Legion of Honor medal is not awarded posthumously. The Legion of Honor is the highest distinction awarded by France. All applications are throughly reviewed and considered. However, due to the high volume of requests that U.S. Consulates receive, the process of nomination or rejection of an applicant can take up to 6-9 months.
