April 7. 2013, at approximately 12:37 am., members ofthe Seventh District and the DC FEMS were summoned to 2726 Langston Place, Southeast. for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, members located the decedent, later identified as Darius Cannon, sixteen years ofage. lying on the sidewalk in front of the aforementioned residence. The decedent was found unconscious and unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. The decedent was transported to Med Star, where all life saving efforts proved futile. The decedent was subsequently pronounced dead at 1:14 by Doctor Trankeim The decedent's remains were later transported to the DC Medical Exaininer's Office pending autopsy. Later that moming, Dr. Joseph Pestaner conducted an autopsy on the decedent's remains. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest. The manner of death was ntled a homicide. An investigation into the offense was undertaken by members of the Criminal Investigations Division Homicide Branch. An individual later identified as Witness One, hereafier referred to as W-l. was located and intewiewed. W-1 stated it was in the parking lot area when the shooting occurred. W-1 heard a single gunshot and turned around and observed the gumnan briefly chase the decedent down the sidewalk and shoot again. The decedent subsequently went down. While the decedent was lying on the ground, the shooter then stood over him and pointed the handgun at the decedent. Once the decedent was no longer moving, the suspect attempted to flee toward the main gate, however, the suspect then iumed about and went in the other direction toward the Seventh District Police Station, W-1 described the shoomr as being a black male, approximately its height (approximately 57") and having a medium build. dark complexion, with a fade haircut. The haircut is further described as being very low or nothing on the sides, and then being like a box or medium high top (such as a 90's high top fade, but not very high). The suspect was wearing blue jeans and a black puffy vest that it described as "plaid." over a hooded sweatshirt. When shown Googled pictures ofplaid the Scottish design). W-1 clarified that that is not what it meant by "plaid." Rather, it the kind of smooth, reflective material that puffy vesm or North Face-style coats are ofien made of. W-l also said that when it saw the shooter standing over the decedent. the shooter's hood was pushed back from his head (as ifit had shifted while he was running), although not all the way down to his neck, which is how W--l was able to see the shooter's complexion and distinctive haircut. LL CV .301 can 00 KMI On April 25, 2013, a search warrant was executed at the defendant's apartment, where two black puffy vests A-were recovered. The black puffy vest matched the description given by W-1. As the investigation continued your affiant discovered that there was in fact a physical altercation that occurred on Friday, April 5, 2013, in the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast, the same complex in which the homicide took place. A review of the properly owned surveillance cameras captured the physical altercation. Witness Two, who hereinafier will be referred to as W--2, was privy to more than one conversation about the physical altercation that occurred on Friday. April 5, 2013 inside of Apartment building 2732 Langston Place, Southeast. W-2 stated the defendant. who is referred to by some as "Char1ie" was stabbed in the and had to seek medical attention. "Chai'lie" also goes by the name of Dion, "Diwood" or "Redwood." further stated the defendant child's mother lives in building 2732, the same building where the physical altercation occurred. Your affiant confirmed Dion Redwood has a child with a female who resides at 2732 Langston Place, Southeast. W-2 was able to obtain a picture of the defendant, which was posted on his Iiistagram account name Mr_hump_ur_head. On April 7, 2013, the defendant posted a photogaph which showed the Defendant holding a white rag over his eye. A picture which showed the defendant with a very low cut on the sides, with medium height hair on top, was posted on April 4, 2013 on his lnstagram account. Witness Three, who hereinafter will be referred to as W--3 was interviewed. W--3 stated IT was standing outside afier the physical altercation on April The victim of the assault known dating the girl upstairs in building 2732. was heard to have yelled, "I'm going to kill all you mother fuckers." During the course of the investigation your aifiant has leamed that on Friday, April 5, 2013, at approximately 11:13 (within an hour afler the assault) Dion Redwood, accompanied by his child's mother, arrived at George Washington University Hospital, for an injury to his right along with other injuries consistent with a physical altercation. According to Dion Redwood, he was jumped and stabbed with a kitchen knife. The following day, Dion Redwood was discharged from George Washington University Hospital at approximately 2.33 p.m. On Monday, April 8, 2013, Dion Redwood filed a police report with Seventh District. Dion Redwood reported he was jumped, robbed and assaulted in the hallway of 2732 Langton Place, Southeast. On the PD 251 (Incident-Event Report) Dion Redwood provided a partial description of the suspects. Suspect 1 was described as a black male, medium complexion, approximately 40.45 years of age. Suspect 2 was described as a black male, I75 pounds, medium complexion. Suspect 3 was described as a black male, medium complexion, 150-200 pounds. and 16 years of age. The other suspects could only be described as black males. The decedent was 16 years of age, 156 pounds and The decedent was also known to hang in the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast, with other individuals of his approximate age. The decedent and his associates were known to congregate in and around the 5 buildings that comprise the apartment complex where the assault and the homicide occurred. At the police station, Dion Redwood provided his celluliir telephone number of(Z02) 277-5362. Subscriber information confirmed that Karen Parker (Dion Redwoods mother with whom he shares a residence) is the subscriber of-- Ms. Parker during an interview reported the iierenii.-inrs telephone number as Subsequently. call detail records consisting of outgoing and incoming calls to include cell site infomiation was obtained. On April 5, 2013, the evening of the assault between the hours of22l4 and 2228 hours, the cell site information revealed Dion Redwood's phone utilized the side of the aforementioned tower The side of the tower is known to be the side covering the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast. On April 7. 2013 at 0021 hours, Dion Redwood's phone utilized a cell tower located at 4714 Marlboro Pike, Coral Hills. MD which is in the vicinity ofhis place of residence and is approximately 2 to 3 driving miles from the homicide scene. On April 7, 2013 at 0030 hours (seven minutes prior to the murder), Dion Redwo0d's phone utilized a cell tower located at 2701 Naylor Road, Southeast. A further analysis revealed that the phone utilized the side of the aforernentioned tower. The side of the tower is known to be the side covering the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast. Afier the homicide there were no phone calls made. At approximately 0127 hours, Dion's Redwood phone utilized the cell tower located at 4714 Marlboro Pike, Coral Hills, MD which is in the vicinity ofhis place ofrcsidence. The defendants cell phone records indicated the defendant's telephone number communicated with Witness Four, who hercinafier will be referred to as on April 6, 2013. W--4 was interviewed and stated it conversed bnefly with the defendant in reference to the physical altercation that occurred on the evening ofApril 5, 2013. The defendant stated that he was assaulted by some "youngins" in the hallway on Langston. On April 6. 2013, at 2214 hours. approximately 2 hours and 23 minutes prior to the homicide, t.l-ie defendant called W-4. There were periods of communication by text and phone conversation between W--4 and the defendant prior to the homicide. The last communication between W-4 and the defendant occurred at 0034 hours on April 7, 2013 (three minutes prior to the homicide). During these communications, the defendant asked W41, who is known to hang out in the area of the homicide, words to the effect ofwhat is the location of the "youngins" or whether W41 saw the "youngiris." W-4 and the defendant spoke again briefly at 0127 hours. At this time the defendant's cell phone now placed him back in the vicinity ofhis place ofresidertce. As the investigation progressed, detectives reviewed video footage from private surveillance cameras that surrounded the area of the homicide. Upon doing so, detectives discovered that approximately two minutes prior to the homicide, a subject entered the 2700 block of Langston Place, SE on foot and walked eastbound towards 2726 Langston Place. SE. The subject is shown to be wearing dark clothing on his upper body and blue jeans on his lower body. The subject's head appears to be concealed by a hood as he enters the 2700 block of Langston Place. Upon reaching 2726 Langston Place, SE, the subject quickly Iums to his left and nins towards the front steps of the building where the decedent was known to be standing. The Sl.|l3jECi. is then seen running from the area of the front steps of 2726 Langston Place, SE and fleeing towards Knox Place, SE. Due to the distance of the camera to the shooting, the details of the shooting cannot be dcciphered. The subject's face is not shown in the video. Based on aforementioned facts and circumstances, your affianr believes that probable cause exists and respectfully requests that an arrest warrant be issued for Dion Redwood for this offense. Det.
